It seems like people are reaching out to me more often.
The question for today is, “Do recruiters even use resumes anymore?” Well, let me start with the succinct answer. Yes. Recruiters use resumes. Here’s what’s going on.
You may be reached out to, you may be reached out to buy recruiters to LinkedIn or different social networks that you belong to, where there trying to find you and they are reached out to you based upon something that they have learned about you. For example, if you are in get up and they see that you are in certain areas, they know what you do. Generally. BUT, if it is a third party recruiter, or a corporate recruiter for that matter, they want to know more.
“They are talking to me!”
Yes, but the person is going to talk to you after them may need to know more. The me interview you, but they are going to want to see a resume.
You see, for a lot of job hunters, they are confusing being the hunter with being hunted. For example, if someone is reaching out to you, you are being hunted. They are trying to get some preliminary information from you in order to determine whether you actually do have the experience that they are looking for. If you are the hunter, you have a resume that you are sending to hiring managers, recruiters, posting on job boards… You are doing a lot of obvious things because you are hunting.
But, it sounds like from the question, you are in the role of being hunted. As such, the initial contact isn’t coming from resume unless it is one that lives in the applicant tracking system or the database in their sourcing you from there to see how you have evolved from the last time that they spoke with you. There, an agency may be looking to update your resume, they may do it themselves so that they have an advantage. Here’s how the thinking about advantage.
If you decide that you are open to the job that they are representing, sometimes, recruiters are afraid that if you update your resume, you are now going to send it to other people. After all, you’ve decided you’re going to look at other choices. While you’re looking if there is, you might look at someone else’s. They might rather do the resume update for you.
However, overall, if firms are reaching out to you, they are hunting you. They’re doing it on the basis of old information, that they found you on LinkedIn, that they found you somewhere else and you appear to be discussing things that matter to them. But, they’re going to circle back and want to resume in a corporation. If they are third party recruiter, they may or may not want the resume. The resume will give them more details of the how you got to where you are, some of the choices that you made, some of the ways that you have excelled (or been mediocre) in your career. They are going to want more than what a simple conversation is going to provide them with.
Again, firms use resumes. Recruiters, both corporate and third-party, use resumes. There’s no getting around it and it is actually to your benefit.
